KwaMhlanga – Ahead of today’s road safety campaign launch, authorities in Mpumalanga have yet again identified the under-construction Moloto Road as a major cause of deadly festive-season crashes.
Community Safety spokesman Moeti Mmusi, on Wednesday, said: “The road carries a large volume of traffic on a daily basis and during the holiday season gets worse.
“The road has over the years recorded many deadly crashes. It has also been identified as one of the priority routes during this year’s festive season.”
Moloto Road has the highest number of crashes in the country: 33 accidents killed 38 people over the past five years, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
A route for the movement of goods and passengers, it links Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo and stretches from Pretoria, past KwaMhlanga, all the way to Marble Hall.
Thursday’s road safety campaign launch will be presided over by Community Safety MEC Vusi Shongwe, who will fill traffic and police officers in on his road safety plans.
Said Mmusi: “The [plan is] not only to ensure the smooth transportation of people and goods, but also to curb lawless, reckless, and negligence driving, which often leads to deadly crashes and needless loss of lives.“
