Durban – The Nazareth Baptist Church will from midnight embark on a sacred pilgrimage to Ekhenana Holy Mountain.
This annual pilgrimage, steeped in tradition and spirituality, holds immense significance for the members of the Nazareth Baptist Church as it marks a holy start to the new year.
Founded in 1910, the Nazareth Baptist Church, also known as “Shembe”, is the second-largest, African-initiated church in South Africa.
Believers walk about 60km to the holy mountain in Ozwathini.
Commenting on the pilgrimage on Tuesday, the African National Congress (ANC) said it subjects itself to the spiritual guidance of leaders of faith-based organisations.
“Respectfully, our posture is informed by our clear understanding that the ANC was formed in a church and that our constitution was designed specifically to protect all religions, cultures, and customs,” the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said in a statement.
“In particular, as the ANC we pause to light a candle for Nazareth Baptist Church devotees as they leave their homes to begin the pilgrimage to the Holly Mountain this January 2024.
“May the light shine upon them – bless them with safety and comfort.”
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) said it recognises the importance of this spiritual journey to Ekhenana Holy Mountain for the Nazareth Baptist Church.
“May the pilgrimage be a source of spiritual rejuvenation and a time of reflection for all attendees,” the ATM said in a statement.
“We wish safe travels to all those who will be participating in this sacred pilgrimage, praying for their protection and well-being throughout the journey.”
The ATM added that it would like to “shine a light” on the esteemed leader of the Nazareth Baptist Church, Inkosi uNyazi LweZulu.
“We commend his outstanding leadership and the remarkable impact he has had on the community through his spiritual guidance,” the ATM said.
“Under his stewardship, the Nazareth Baptist Church has been a beacon of hope, fostering spiritual growth and community development.
“Inkosi uNyazi LweZulu’s dedication to the spiritual well-being of the community and his commitment to uplifting the lives of others through his exemplary leadership are truly commendable.”
