Youngsters have a lot on their minds, often more than what their family or friends may think.

A lot of Gen Z or millennial youth today struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes everything from a well-balanced diet to a sound mind and positive outlook.

Blame it on the widespread use of technology or the popularity of hustle culture, many youngsters may tend to push ‘health’ down below other points on their priority list.

Let’s dive into some actionable tips that can help you not just survive but thrive with a healthier lifestyle.

Choosing Healthy Foods and Meal Routines

All parents can help their kids when it comes to choosing the foods they eat and the way they eat them.

If your family has the time, try to ask your parents to make a healthy dinner that everyone in the household can eat together at the same time each day.

Remember, healthy foods are ones that supply our bodies with necessary carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals in a balanced manner. Perhaps the most healthy meals include lots of vegetables and minimally processed foods.

By eating together as a family at a set time, you can also encourage both younger and older family members to develop a healthy eating routine, that is, a routine of consuming at least three meals daily at predictable times.

Additionally, eating meals with everyone around a table without screens, like TVs and phones, can help you connect with everyone in the family.

This special family socialisation time can promote bonding and may lead to a greater sense of happiness.

Implementing an Exercise Routine

Exercise is proven to lower stress hormones and improve mood on top of keeping a healthy weight.

For youngsters, daily exercise is vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle now and to help maintain it in the future. Aim to set aside at least 20 minutes every day for exercise – at home or the gym.

You can check out various YouTube videos to learn about home exercises aimed at beginners and experts alike.

Getting Enough Sleep

Teenagers are recommended to get about eight to 10 hours of sleep every 24 hours.

In general, any youngster should aim for around eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.

While it may be tempting to binge-watch a season of that new Netflix web series, stream replays of NFL games or engage in a marathon Minecraft session, sleep deprivation can affect your focus and alertness levels the next day.

Besides, depriving yourself of sleep for prolonged periods can have an impact on your mental health in the long run.

Be sure to try to go to bed at a reasonable time each night so that you can wake up energized in the morning before school or the office.

Visiting Doctors and Dentists

All youngsters should aim to visit a dentist for a routine cleaning at least once every six months and a doctor for a check-up once every year.

Although the instances of medical ailments in the youth are low, it is helpful to get any problem under control before it develops into something serious.

Avoiding Alcohol, Smoking, and Drugs

Of all age groups, the youth are perhaps most at risk for picking up unhealthy habits, including the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, or other drugs.

To stop these habits before they start, be sure to read up about the impact of these substances on your health.

Remember, long-term smoking can lead to lung diseases while long-term drinking can lead to liver diseases.

Limiting Screen Time

While the world is ever-changing and it seems that more tasks must be done using screens, it is still a good idea to limit our time spent watching TV or surfing the web.

Studies have shown that teens who limit their smartphone use have improved mental health than those who don’t.

A good hack to beat the temptation of checking your phone is keeping it away from your bed or study desk.

That way, you will have an effort barrier to overcome every time you pick up your phone. Another strategy can be to turn off unnecessary notifications for apps except important ones such as those for banking.

Making Positive Friendships

Youngsters can benefit from positive friendships that are made in school, college, or the workplace.

You may also consider joining a community group, such as a book club, volunteer organisation, or faith-based group to meet like-minded individuals.

Summary

Fostering a healthy lifestyle among today’s youth is not just a personal responsibility but a collective effort involving families, communities, and youth themselves.

The challenges posed by modern lifestyles, marked by technology and hustle culture, necessitate a mindful approach to well-being.

By adopting the above measures, you can not only proactively engage in but also sustain a healthy lifestyle, paving the way for a more fulfilling and resilient future.
