Balfour – The off-duty policeman, who was fatally shot at the weekend near his home in Balfour, Mpumalanga, has been identified as 45-year-old Sergeant Mandla Alex Nhleko.
The slain police officer was attached to the Grotvlei Police Station.
Sergeant Nhleko was shot in the upper body on Saturday night and rushed to a clinic, where he unfortunately succumbed to gunshot wounds.
The motive for the deadly shooting remains a subject of police probe.
Commenting on the shooting incident on Wednesday, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said Sergeant Nhleko joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 2006.
The police spokesperson said the murder case was referred to the Hawks for further investigation.
“The victim was taken to a nearby clinic for medical treatment. However, upon arrival at the clinic, they discovered that the member was shot and unfortunately succumbed,” said Colonel Mdhluli.
“The victim sustained some gunshot wounds on his upper body.”
The murder of the sergeant was condemned by the provincial police management.
“The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has since sent heartfelt condolences to the family of Nhleko whilst vowing that police will work tirelessly to ensure that his murderers are soon brought to book,” Colonel Mdhluli said.
