Johannesburg – Tokoza residents on Wednesday protested against a teacher found with drugs at Thoko Thaba Secondary School in Ekurhuleni.
Responding to the protests, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said: “We are disappointed about this incident, and vehemently condemn such conduct, and we will be acting against it accordingly.
“We also plead with the community to allow this matter to be handled by the department and relevant law enforcement authorities for appropriate resolution.”
The teacher was allegedly found with drugs on school premises on Valentine’s Day. (14 February 2024).
However, MEC Chiloane said the matter was not reported to the department by the school management team.
“According to our report, the educator was allegedly found last week with a bag and box of drugs inside the school premises,” MEC Chiloane said.
“Police were called and he was arrested. He appeared in court on Thursday, 15 February 2024.”
MEC Chiloane said now that his department was aware of the matter it has launched an investigation.
The teacher has been removed from the school as a precaution.
