Durban – A truck driver has died in a freak accident in which a container he was transporting on a trailer shifted and fell on top of his truck cab.
Witnesses said the truck driver was trying to turn at Imola Place Westmead when the tragedy occurred Thursday morning.
Responders, ALS Paramedics Medical Service, said the freak accident happened at around 07:15 when the container with 20 tons of timber shifted and fatally crushed the driver.
ALS Paramedics said when they arrived on the scene, they found out that a horse and trailer with a full load had attempted to turn when the container somehow shifted and landed on the truck cab crushing the driver.
“The driver believed to be in his 30s was found severely entrapped in the cabin,” said ALS Paramedics.
“He had sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing more paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene.”
Netcare 911 Rescue unit together with the Ethekwini Fire Department used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to remove the body of the driver from the cab.
At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown, however, the SA Police Service will be investigating further.
The dead driver has not yet been named.
