Mahikeng – North West Constituency Officer Sello Shimmy Moleko also known as “Comrade Shakes” has died in a head-on collision.
The 55-year-old Constituency Officer’s VW Amarok bakkie and a VW Polo sedan collided along the R503 Lichtenburg-Mahikeng Road around 19:30 on Easter Sunday.
Both vehicles caught alight on impact resulting in the two drivers losing their lives in the horrific accident near Blaauwbank.
Apart from the drivers, there were no other persons in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
The driver VW polo was yet to be named.
In a statement released Monday, the Office of the ANC Chief Whip in the North West Provincial Legislature said the party was “mourning the death of one of its caucus staff members”.
”We are shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Comrade Shakes Moleko whose contribution to the coordination of ANC Parliamentary Constituency Offices across the province and the support that he rendered the ANC Provincial Department of Information and Publicity (DIP) was invaluable,” said ANC Chief Whip Paul Sebegoe.
Sebegoe said earlier on Sunday Moleko supported the ANC Easter Church Services Visit programme in Potchefstroom.
Thereafter “Comrade Shakes” proceeded to another engagement in Ottosdal/Letsopa in the Tswaing Sub-District of the ANC Ngaka Modiri Molema Region.
Moleko was on his way home when he was involved in the road crash that claimed his life.
Moleko joined the Office of the ANC Chief Whip in 2009.
Sebegoe said Moleko left an indelible mark.
“He leaves behind a legacy of selflessness that characterised his loyal service to the glorious movement and revolutionary life,” said Sebegoe.
He described Moleko as a live wire with a larger-than-life personality, forthright as well as a courageous and devoted cadre who understood the importance of supporting the organisation as the only vehicle to change the lives of people.
“His love for the movement, interpersonal skills as well as his ability to network as a team player made this revolutionary cadre an indispensable member of the ANC support staff,” said Sebegoe.
“We will be poorer without him because he was one we could count on.”
Moleko, who hailed from Itsoseng, and lived in Mosiane View in Mahikeng is survived by his wife and 20-year-old son.
