Potchefstroom – Thirty-one-year-old SA Police Service (SAPS) Constable Mogoro Clement Makola was shot dead on Monday evening, (15 April 2024), in Lekgalong village, near Marikana outside Rustenburg.
In a statement on Wednesday, the North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena said he was “saddened” by the murder of Constable Makola.
Narrating events leading to the fatal shooting, the SAPS said reports indicate that Constable Makola, who was off duty, was coming out of the shop when approached by the three unknown men.
One of them pointed the off duty constable with a firearm and demanded money.
In an attempt to disarm the suspect, Mokola was ultimately shot several times in the upper body.
The trio fled the scene on foot while the victim’s wife transported him to Kanana clinic.
Unfortunately, the constable was declared dead on arrival.
Lieutenant General Kwena condemned the incident “in the strongest possible terms” and urged the investigation team to leave no stone unturned to arrest the perpetrators.
He also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Constable Makola’s family, colleagues, and relatives.
SAPS said a manhunt has been launched and the police request anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigations to contact Captain Thuso Tlou of Marikana Detectives on 082 772 7810 or Crime Stop number: 08600 10111.
