Johannesburg – At least 42 human remains from the horror bus crash at the Mamatlakala bridge, including the six that were identifiable, have been positively identified through the DNA processes.
All in all 45 worshippers from Botswana perished in the crash in which the bus plummeted about 50 metres from the bridge before catching alight on impact with the ground below.
Many of the bodies were burnt beyond identification.
Miraculously, a Standard 4 learner, Lorraine Atlang Siako, was the only person to survive. She has since returned to Botswana after being discharged from hospital.
The multidisciplinary team, which is currently responsible for coordinating the recovery and identification of the remains on Friday said: “Up to so far 42 human remains which include the six that were identifiable have been positively identified through the DNA processes”.
The identification will result in the repatriation of the remains of those who perished on 28 March 2024.
The team comprising members of the SAPS victim identification unit and Forensic Pathology Services will meet on Monday at Mokopane Hospital, where they will finalise the packaging of the remains of the deceased to prepare them for repatriation.
“We are short of words to appreciate our team for the professionalism and speed at which they managed to handle this disaster and appreciating its sensitivity,” said Limpopo Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba.
“We are looking forward to meeting the team on Monday 22 April 2024 at Mokopane Hospital where further updates on the way forward will be provided.
“The team is currently finalising the analysis of the remaining samples.”
