Pretoria – Alert members of the Rapid Rail Police Unit heard a gunshot at the Pretoria Railway Station and saw a man running with a gun.
When the police ordered him to stop, the suspect fired at them before they shot, injured, and arrested him.
The drama unfolded Tuesday, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said.
Narrating events leading to the arrest of the 30-year-old suspect, Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said on hearing the gunshot the police quickly rushed to the scene and noticed a man, who was carrying a firearm, running towards the CBD.
“When asked to stop, the suspect fired shots at the police and police responded by shooting back,” said Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.
“The suspect was shot and injured before he was arrested.”
The suspect was found with a firearm and ammunition.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who is from Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal, had just shot and killed a meter taxi owner,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
The victim, a chairperson of a Meter Taxi Association in Pretoria Central, was declared dead at the scene.
The suspect is in hospital under police guard.
He will be charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The injured suspect is expected to appear before Pretoria Magistrate’s Court when is discharged from hospital.
