Johannesburg – A kidnapping, car theft, and hijacking suspect, who was out on bail, has been shot dead by the SA Police Service (SAPS) anti-kidnapping task team.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Wednesday that the suspect, who is yet to be named, was shot dead along the N12 between Kliprivier and Xavier off-ramp in Johannesburg.
Narrating events leading to the shooting, Brigadier Mathe said a SAPS multidisciplinary team was tracing suspects linked to the kidnapping of Benoni businessman Shamshudeen Faki when they were engaged in a shoutout along the N12 on Tuesday night.
The 68-year-old businessman was kidnapped at his business premises on Saturday, (11 May 2024), and a ransom was demanded from Faki’s family.
Sadly, on Monday, (13 May 2024), the businessman’s body was found dumped in Dalpark, Johannesburg.
It is believed that Faki died while in the custody of his kidnappers.
Brigadier Mathe said the SAPS team followed up on information and traced a suspect to the N12, where the shootout ensued.
“The suspect was found in possession of Mr. Faki’s identity documents, a blue light, licensed number plates used in the commission of the kidnapping, two firearms including a pistol and a revolver,” said Brigadier Mathe.
“This criminal was found to be linked to at least 29 vehicle theft and car hijacking cases and was circulated as a wanted suspect.
“His accomplices on the kidnapping case of Mr. Faki are being sought by police.”
Brigadier Mather said at least 250 suspects linked to kidnapping for ransom have been arrested in the last two years in South Africa.
