Secunda – A man and woman arrested for theft, contravention of the Medicine Act, and conspiracy to commit corruption have been released on R3 000 bail.
The accused pair – 35-year-old Thabiso Mokwana and 44-year-old Suraya Norinisha Mayet – appeared in the Secunda District Court in Secunda, Mpumalanga on Friday, (24 May 2024), where they were granted bail.
Allegations are that the two colluded with an employee of a medical centre to assist them in stealing medical equipment.
The accused allegedly offered an employee R5 000 to help them carry out the theft.
However, Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thandi Tshabalala said authorities were tipped off and a trap was set.
“On Wednesday, the suspects came to Braun Dialysis Centre in Trichardt to collect the equipment,” said Warrant Officer Tshabalala.
“The transaction was finalised and the equipment valued at R160 000 was loaded in a red VW Polo.”
Before the suspects could take off with their loot, law enforcers pounced.
“The suspects were immediately intercepted and were found in possession of medical dialysis equipment,” said Warrant Officer Tshabalala
“During the arrest, exhibits with an estimated value of R160 000 were confiscated including a red VW Polo and R5 000 in cash.”
The case against the pair was postponed to 30 July 2024 pending further investigation.
