Johannesburg – Newly sworn-in Democratic Alliance (MP) Renaldo Gouws has been suspended by his party over racist views he expressed in video clips that have gone viral.
In a terse statement, the DA said on Thursday that it has “established that the video, in which Renaldo Gouws uses execrable language, is in fact genuine and not a fake as initially suspected”.
The statement added: “The DA Federal Executive has therefore suspended Mr. Gouws with immediate effect while he faces disciplinary charges before the Party’s Federal Legal Commission”.
The outcry over Gouws and demands for him to be removed from Parliament have amplified with the surfacing of more racist video clips the DA MP posted on social media.
Gouws has denied the latest video clips to surface were genuine. He had apologised for the earlier posts he made over a decade ago.
Meanwhile, the South African Human Rights Commission said it will today institute proceedings at the Equality Court in Gqeberha against Gouws, the suspended MP, for racial utterances relating to online media posts.
