Cape Town – The body of a hiker who went missing on the Otter Trail in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park has been recovered.
“The hiker was reported missing by his hiking group after he went ahead during their hike and was last seen at approximately 13:00 on the second last day of the trail,” said South African National Parks (SANParks) on Wednesday, (10 July 2024).
“He did not arrive at the last overnight hut.”
In a statement, SANParks said it “regrets to inform the public that the body of the missing hiker on the Otter Trail in Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park has been recovered”.
SANParks Rangers, joined by National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), began a search Tuesday around 15:43 despite unfavourable weather conditions, large swells, and swollen rivers.
By nightfall, there was no sign of the missing man.
“The search resumed at first light today with the support of SAPS and Police Search and Rescue teams. Unfortunately, the hiker was found deceased,” SANParks said.
“The family of the deceased has been notified by Park Management and is being supported during this difficult time.”
In light of the adverse weather, SANParks said it was continuously monitoring conditions, and hikers are advised against crossing fast-flowing rivers or areas affected by the high sea conditions.
“The Otter Trail remains open, and Park Management is closely monitoring the situation,” said SANParks.
“We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased hiker.”
