Durban – Three firefighters have died in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Midlands, where they were battling raging bushfires.
The fires that ravaged parts of King Cetshwayo, Ilembe, uThukela, and Zululand Districts, claimed seven other lives.
On Sunday, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa revealed that three firefighters succumbed to injuries sustained during a devastating fire incident.
Explaining how the unfolding tragedy occurred, Operations Director at Midlands EMS Roland Robertson said the fire surrounded the firefighters who were battling a veld fire in the Boston area, KZN Midlands.
Robertson said there was “nowhere to run”.
Ambulances and helicopters were used to evacuate the injured firefighters and take to them to medical facilities.
Some firefighters were receiving treatment in hospital for severe burn wounds.
Minister Hlabisa expressed “deep sadness” over the tragic loss.
“Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen firefighters during this incredibly difficult time,” Minister Hlabisa said.
“Their dedication and selflessness in the face of danger shows the true spirit of service and sacrifice that defines our firefighting community.”
The minister further extended his “condolences to all those affected by this heartbreaking loss and the earlier veld fires that ravaged parts of the King Cetshwayo, Ilembe, uThukela, and Zululand districts, which claimed seven lives”.
Three more firemen reportedly succumbed to their injuries in hospital. This brings to six the number of firefighters who lost their lives while battling the deadly veld fires.
The National Disaster Management Centre, as a key player in the administration and implementation of fire services legislation and related duties, stands ready to support the Midlands EMS and KZN local authorities during this period of mourning and recovery.
