Potchefstroom – Eight tavern patrons were shot dead early Saturday morning by gunmen who said they were “looking for Basotho” at Extension 13, Kanana Location, near Orkney outside Klerksdorp, in the North West.
Seven people died on the spot and one other person succumbed to gunshot wounds at a hospital.
Recounting the shooting horror, North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the gunmen were reportedly looking for Basotho at the tavern.
Brigadier Mokgwabone said the gunmen randomly fired shots killing seven people – one female and six males, while several others were injured, said Brigadier Mokgwabone.
The eighth person died in hospital.
“The suspects then took the CCTV system, cash from the till, and a snooker table,” said Brigadier Mokgwabone.
“The suspects further robbed patrons of their cellphones and fled from the scene.
“Police are still combing through the scene. The motive is yet to be determined and no arrest has been effected.”
North West SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena said he condemns the murders in the” strongest possible terms”.
