Cape Town – Police shot dead eight suspected cash-in-transit robbers in Town Two, Khayelitsha Monday evening and recovered high-calibre weapons including AK47 and R5 rifles.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said a multidisciplinary team – acting on a tip-off – swooped on the would-be armed robbers.

The police team comprised the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) members (better known as the Hawks), intelligence operatives, Special Task Force members, and security company officials.

“As the team approached the suspects, the would-be robbers started firing shots at police who retaliated,” said Brigadier Potelwa.

“As a consequence eight suspects were shot dead and five were arrested.”

Brigadier Potelwa said the police recovered an arsenal of weapons that included:

  • 7X AK 47 Rifles
  • 2X R5 Rifles
  • 1X R4 Rifle
  • 1X Dashprod Rifle
  • 2X 9mm pistols
  • 3X Improvised Explosive Chargers
  • Numerous magazines filled with rounds of ammunition

“The DPCI detectives are hard at work with investigations and following up on additional information,” Brigadier Potelwa said.
