Pretoria – Police have rescued a kidnapped Pakistani businessman and arrested three suspects.
One of the suspects was shot in the leg when he attempted to disarm a police officer during the arrest.
Narrating events leading to the arrest, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk said the police had been investigating the kidnapping case since last month.
The kidnapping case emanated from a business robbery in Ennerdale on 27 August 2024 in which two business partners were attacked at their hardware store.
“One was killed at the scene and another kidnapped for ransom,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk.
“The kidnappers had demanded large sums of money for the victim.”
Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk said, acting on intelligence, the police arrested the suspects at various addresses in Gauteng on Sunday, (8 September 2024).
“The victim of kidnapping was rescued from an address in Lawley and reunited with his family,” she said.
The arrested suspects include a South African and two Mozambicans.
“Two suspects are in police holding cells while one is under police guard in hospital,” Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk said.
“The suspect sustained a gunshot wound after trying to disarm a police officer during his arrest.”
The three are facing charges of murder, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
