ROADS REOPENED: N3 Route cleared after heavy snowfall

Durban – The storm is over and all roads have been reopened to traffic, the government has announced.

Hundreds of vehicles were stuck in heavy snow along the N3 and other roads at the weekend resulting in at least one death.

The person, who was a passenger in a minibus taxi, reportedly died of hyperthermia, owing to the cold.

In a terse statement on Monday (23 September 2024), the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said it was “pleased to announce that all roads affected by recent snowstorm, including the N3 Toll Route, have now been reopened to traffic”.

The statement added: “These include key routes in Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape.

“The extensive backlog of traffic between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State has been cleared.”

Motorists can resume their travels, the statement said.

However, GCIS warned: “Although the roads are cleared, road users are urged to drive cautiously as some roads remain slippery, and weather conditions limit visibility.

“Government thanks all citizens, emergency services, government entities, humanitarian organisations, and stakeholders for their support during this time.

“Stay informed by tuning in to local radio stations and following government social media pages for updates.”
