Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit) – All roads lead to Mbombela Stadium, in Mpumalanga, where the Springboks battle Argentina for the Rugby Championship title on Saturday, (28 September 2024).
Traffic law enforcement and other security measures have been beefed up on key roads in and around Mbombela.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison warned that, on Saturday, there will be high visibility of law enforcement personnel.
Affected roads include the N2, N3, N4, N11, N12, R38 and R40.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie encouraged road users to “fully adhere to traffic rules”.
MEC Macie warned against driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless and negligent driving since contributing to human error crashes.
“We are excited to be hosting Argentina on our shores because it will not only contribute to the excitement that is brought by sports. Hosting big events also boosts our economy and tourism,” said MEC Macie.
“What usually affects the exhilaration is usually road crashes that are mostly avoidable.
“Hence, we are appealing to road users to use the road with great caution this weekend.
“We further reassure the road users and visitors that the security will be on high alert to respond to any emerging situation.
“Long-distance drivers to rest sufficiently along the way and also ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.”
Meanwhile, Coach Johan “Rassie” Erasmus has predicted that, “It’s going to be a massive challenge against an Argentina Team, that has something special brewing and who will give everything to win the competition for the first time”.
