Johannesburg – A senior staff member of Rivoni Secondary School in Daveyton has been shot dead at Chris Hani Mall, where he was attending a meeting.

The name of the staffer has been withheld.

The staff member was fatally shot on Tuesday, (8 October 2024), while attending a meeting related to a case involving one of his colleagues.

Reacting to the shooting, Gauteng Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation MEC Matome Chiloane, said he was “devastated by the tragic passing of a male Deputy Principal of Rivoni Secondary School in Daveyton”.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the entire school community.

The GDE has activated psycho-social support services for those affected by this tragedy.

Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“We are heartbroken by this senseless killing of our dedicated educator and leader in our education community,” said MEC Chiloane.

“Our deepest sympathies are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The fatal shooting was the second tragic incident in as many days affecting the education sector.

On Monday, (7 October 2024), 42 learners from Relebogile Secondary School in Carletonville were involved in a scholar transport accident on Monday, 7 October 2024.

All the learners were rushed to a nearby hospital following the crash.

Six of the learners sustained injuries, while two of them suffered serious fractures as a result.

The Gauteng Department of Education was monitoring their condition and will provide further updates on their recovery.

“We are deeply concerned about the well-being of the affected learners and we will ensure they receive the necessary medical care,” said MEC Chiloane.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with their families during this challenging time and we wish learners speedy recovery.”
