Johannesburg – A defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Thulani Mngomezulu, has died in hospital.
Announcing the passing of lawyer Mngomezulu, family spokesperson Dumisile Mngomezulu said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and son.
“We confirm his untimely passing in the early hours of the 10th of December 2024 at Vosloorus, Thelle Moroerane Hospital.”
With the murder trial broadcast live on TV, Lawyer Mngomezulu had become a familiar face to many viewers.
Mngomezulu was the lawyer for Muzikawukhulelwa “Muzi” Sibiya, accused number one, in the ongoing trial.
The defence lawyer had not been present in court since 8 November 2024 because of illness.
“In this time of grief, we ask for your compassion, space, and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days,” said the family spokesperson.
“We thank you for the love and support in advance and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers.”
Social media enthusiasts were quick to remind their audience that trial Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, unfortunately, in the past suggested that ailing lawyer Mngomezulu may have been playing truant when he failed to attend court.
