Durban – A multiple-vehicle collision along Old Dutch Road, in Durban, Saturday afternoon left two pedestrians dead.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services said the collision at the intersection involving five vehicles occurred just after 12:30.
Spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said when ALS Paramedics arrived at the scene of the collision, they found that “five vehicles had collided in the intersection before some of the vehicles left the roadway colliding with pedestrians”.
Jamieson added: “Paramedics immediately called for more assistance to assist with the multiple casualty scene.
“Paramedics used a triage system and found that two pedestrians both males had been struck on the pavement.
“Unfortunately one of them, a male believed to be in his 30s had sustained major injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene.”
Jamieson said a second male pedestrian believed to be in his 40s had sustained critical injuries and was placed on a manual ventilator by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being rushed through to a nearby specialist facility, however, he passed away.
At least five other injured occupants of vehicles involved in the crashes were treated on the scene by ALS Paramedics before they were transported to a nearby Durban hospital.
At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown.
South African Police Service officials were on the scene.
