Johannesburg – The African National Congress (ANC) has retained its seat in the by-election in KwaZulu-Natal and won a seat in the Northern Cape, the Electoral Commission (IEC) announced Thursday.

The by-elections were held on Wednesday, (18 December 2024).

The IEC named the new ANC Councillors as:

  • Mbongeni Zuma, in Ward 2 in the Msunduzi Municipality, KZN225, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 51.36% of the total votes cast, compared to 38.44% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 39.81%.
  • Gerrit Laban, in Ward 7 in the Hantam Municipality, NC065, Northern Cape. The party won a seat previously held by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 45.68% of the total votes cast, compared to 34.53% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 48.27%.

Commenting on the KZN by-election victory, the ANC in the province said winning Ward 2, Umsunduzi, “shows that the party is regaining lost ground”.

The party added: “As the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal, we wish to express our deepest appreciation to the community of Ward 2 in Umsunduzi for the show of confidence in the ANC.”

The by-election results for Ward 2 in Umsunduzi were:

  • ANC – 1602
  • MKP – 1164
  • IFP – 344
