Nkandla – Heavy rains have destroyed houses in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

“Following heavy rains and strong winds that wreaked havoc and left a trail of destruction in Ward 1, Emanzamnyama in Inkandla,” Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said on Saturday, (28 December 2024).

MEC Duma reported the following:

  • A roving team from the Department of Human Settlements – national and provincial will be assessing the damage and accelerating interventions.
  • A verification process will be speeded up from tomorrow to ensure that the needs of vulnerable households are addressed.

The province is monitoring weather reports from South African Weather Services.

“We commend the Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Nkadimeng for setting up a satellite office in KZN and for deploying a Disaster Management Team,” said MEC Duma.

“This agility will not only strengthen an integrated approach involving three spheres of government but will ensure speed in the delivery of emergency housing and other relief efforts.

“We commend the chair of the portfolio committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Sizophila Mkhize for working with the local Councillor and for alerting authorities on behalf of the affected communities.”
