Just before 6 am this morning, ALS paramedics responded to a horrific minibus taxi crash on the N2 southbound before the Spaghetti Junction.
Multiple ambulances and Advanced Life Support Paramedics were dispatched to the scene.
“As the initial caller said, multiple casualties had been injured,” said ALS Paramedics Medical Services Spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.
He said when paramedics arrived on the scene they found out that a minibus taxi, fully laden with at least 23 people, had somehow lost control and collided with a barrier before rolling multiple times, ejecting most of its passengers.
Jamieson said paramedics immediately called for more resources and began a triage situation.
Paramedics from multiple ambulance services treated 21 patients on the scene with injuries ranging from moderate to critical before they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required.
“Unfortunately, two males, believed to be in their 30s and 40s, had sustained major injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for them and no declared deceased at the scene,” said Jamieson.
“The N2 is currently gridlocked in both directions while emergency personnel work on scene and it will be for quite some time.
“At this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown, however, all necessary roleplayers are in attendance and will be investigating further.”
