Johannesburg – The suicidal 42-year-old police sergeant arrested for the murder of his younger girlfriend, 22-year-old Chesnay Patricia Keppler, has been discharged from hospital and will appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The Eldorado Park police sergeant had been in hospital since he shot himself in an attempted suicide before his arrest over a week ago.
IPID – the independent body that investigates deaths, rape, torture, and assault by police officers – said: “The accused police officer is discharged from hospital and is detained at Moroka Police Station”.
Allegations are that the police sergeant shot the 22-year-old traffic warden through a Kitchen window at her Eldorado Park residence on Boxing Day, (26 December 2024).

The violent confrontation was filmed by a witness and the video clip has been handed over to IPID.
The sergeant, who shot himself before his arrest, had been hospitalised under police guard.
The accused could not appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on the initial date, Monday, (30 December 2024).
However, IPID has confirmed the accused has been discharged and will appear in court on Monday, (6 January 2025).
Meanwhile, on Saturday, family, community members, traffic wardens, and other officials came out in numbers to bid farewell to Keppler in Eldorado Park.
During her funeral, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi noted the absence of the South African Police Service.
The premier said the police missed an opportunity to show solidarity with the grieving family and community.

Speaking at the memorial Acting Gauteng Premier Lebogang Maile warned perpetrators of violent crime – including those within law enforcement – that the law would take its course.
Maile told the community of Eldorado Park that the Gauteng Provincial Government will ensure that the family of Warden Keppler receives justice.
