Johannesburg – Owing to the ongoing heavy rains families have been urged to inspect the graves of loved ones amid reports of flooding at cemeteries.
“Recent reports indicate that heavy torrential rains have caused flooding, grave subsidence, and collapsed headstones in various cemeteries across Johannesburg,” said the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the custodians of open spaces, including cemeteries.
In a terse statement on Friday, (10 January 2025), the JCPZ called on families to inspect their loved ones’ gravesites.
“This is a global phenomenon relative to increasing rainfall, and the weather pattern in Johannesburg is expected to continue until March,” said the JCPZ.
“As we enter the peak rainfall season, certain sections, particularly near more recent burials, will be susceptible to erosion, collapsed headstones, and sunken graves.”
Affected areas include Avalon Cemetery in Soweto, Waterval Cemetery in Midrand, Olifantsvlei in the far south of the city, and Westpark Cemetery in Emmarentia.
“While families are responsible for the upkeep, reinstatement of headstones and safeguarding of gravesites, JCPZ recognises the emotional importance of maintaining the integrity of these final resting places,” the statement said.
“We are committed to assisting families in reinstating gravesites and will only refill graves with the families’ consent.”
The JCPZ said residents/families can help by:
- Visiting the cemetery.
- Identifying and reporting erosion, caving-in of graves, and collapsed headstones and tombstones.
- Contacting the manager of Cemeteries and Crematoria, Zolile Mpophoma, by calling 011 712 6600 or emailing zmpophoma@jhbcityparks.com.
- Provide the cemetery name, name of the deceased, section where the grave is located, and the grave number
“Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo will strive to address concerns promptly and with the utmost care and respect,” said the JCPZ.
“Your cooperation in inspecting the gravesites is essential in helping us maintain the beauty and dignity of the gravesite of your loved one.”
