Thohoyandou – A 29-year-old father has been arrested in connection with the death of his 14-month-old son in Mphego village, outside of Thohoyandou, Limpopo.
The accused had been on the run since Saturday, (4 January 2025), after his toddler’s body was found in an abandoned house in Mphego village.
Allegations are that the father confessed his deeds to the toddler’s aunt and pointed out where the body was later found.
The lifeless body of the toddler was found covered with a blue jacket. The baby was covered in blood from his nose and ears.
Allegations are that after killing his son, the 29-year-old kidnapped the toddler’s mother, who is also his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.
The girlfriend was later found alive on Monday, (6 January 2025), and she is recovering in hospital.
Thohoyandou police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Vuledzani Dathi, said the 29-year-old suspect was arrested Thursday, (9 January 2025), at about 20:00 in the Thohoyandou CBD.
While the motive behind the murder and kidnapping remains unknown, Warrant Officer Dathi said domestic violence cannot be ruled out.
The accused, who was arrested by the Thohoyandou Task Team members in the CBD, is facing several charges, including murder, attempted murder, rape, arson and assault.
“The suspect will appear before Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court in due cause,” Warrant Officer Dathi said.
