Pienaar – Six people have been fatally shot and several others wounded by gunfire at a liquor outlet in Pienaar, near Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), Mpumalanga.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the deadly shooting incident occurred Saturday morning, (11 January 2025).

“There was a shooting incident at Pienaar, outside Nelspruit in the early hours of this morning, after 04:00,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane.

“We are still checking because it seems as if about six people were fatally shot at the scene and more details and circumstances surrounding this incident will be provided in due course.”

The deceased include five males and one female.

“There is also an unconfirmed number of victims who sustained some injuries and were taken to hospital,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane.

At this stage, the motive for the shooting spree remains unknown.

No arrests have been reported yet.

Reacting to the deadly shooting, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) demanded a thorough investigation, swift arrests, and prosecution.

“This horrific event not only highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in our communities but also calls for decisive action against those who commit such heinous acts,” the ATM said.

“In light of this tragedy, the ATM extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

“We recognise the immense pain inflicted by this senseless violence and stand in solidarity with the affected families during this incredibly trying time”.
