Durban – At least church members travelling from Richards Bay to Shakaskraal have died after their bus had a tyre burst, veered off the road, and rolled down an embankment.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the deadly crash occurred on Sunday, (9 March 2025), along the N2 between Mandeni and Stanger.

MEC Duma said, “Sadly, at this stage,” fatalities include five females and one male.

“The team is currently working with Mandeni Traffic Department, Emergency Rescue teams, and SAPS to rescue the injured,” MEC Duma said.

“We are requesting motorists to avoid the area just to allow the rescue operation to be carried out.

“This bus accident has occurred as we are about to wrap up our Road Safety Plans for the Easter Holidays.”

MEC Duma added: “We wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

“Myself and our newly appointed Chaplain will be co-ordinating the visit to the families of the deceased.”
