Bloemfontein – All the students from Kagisho Secondary School who fell ill during a weekend study camp have been discharged from hospital.
More than 200 students were affected by suspected food poisoning and they were treated at various health centres and hospitals.

Authorities said health teams at Poly Clinic and Pelonomi Casualty responded swiftly, providing the necessary care to all affected students.
In a joint statement on Tuesday,(11 March 2025, the Free State Departments of Education and Health said they were, “pleased to announce that all 214 learners from Kagisho Secondary School who were affected by the suspected food poisoning incident have been treated and safely discharged to their respective homes as of yesterday, Monday, 10 March 2025”.
The eight female learners – aged between 18 and 20 – who remained at the health facilities for further observation while awaiting the results of blood samples taken for testing were also discharged in good health.
“The Free State Provincial Government extends its gratitude to the dedicated professionals who managed this incident with professionalism and compassion,” the statement said.
“The educators at Kagisho Secondary School played a crucial role in providing emotional support to the learners during this distressing time, ensuring that they felt secure and cared for, especially since not all students had parents with them at the hospitals.
“Emergency Medical Services (EMS) from both the Government and Private Sector demonstrated exceptional efficiency in triaging and transporting the learners to medical facilities.
“The Provincial Government commends the collective efforts of all involved and remain committed to ensuring the health and safety of our learners.”
