Johannesburg – At least 188 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) in just one week.
Revealing the shockingly high number of arrests, the JMPD on Monday, (24 March 2025), said it “remains concerned regarding the number of motorists apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol”.
The JMPD added: “During the period of 17 March to 23 March 2025, a total of 188 motorists were arrested by JMPD officers for this serious offence across the City of Johannesburg”.
The JMPD reiterated its “unwavering commitment to road safety and the protection of all road users” within the City of Johannesburg.
The JMPD said it maintains a “zero-tolerance” approach towards drunk driving and will continue to implement rigorous enforcement operations to identify and apprehend those who choose to operate vehicles while intoxicated.
“These recent arrests serve as a stark reminder of the dangerous consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol,” said the JMPD.
“Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired significantly impairs judgment, reaction time, coordination, and vision.
“This reckless behaviour not only puts the driver at extreme risk but also endangers the lives of innocent pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.”
The JMPD warned that driving under the influence could lead to devastating consequences, including, serious accidents and fatalities, criminal charges, and prosecution.
“The number of arrests for drunk driving is deeply concerning, and it underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and responsible behaviour on our roads,” said JMPD Chief of Police, Chief Patrick Jaca.
“Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of our communities, and we will not hesitate to take strong action against those who choose to endanger others by driving under the influence.
“We urge all motorists to make responsible choices and prioritize the safety of themselves and others.”
The JMPD urged all motorists to take responsibility for their actions and make responsible choices.
“If you plan to consume alcohol, do not drive. Arrange for a designated driver, and utilize public transportation or e-hailing services,” the JMPD said.
