Pretoria – Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has come out in defence of staff member Given Cholo whom it says has been wrongly associated with crimes in Tshwane.

In a terse statement made available to The Bulrushes on Saturday, (5 April 2025), Stats SA said: “It has come to our attention that a Stats SA official, Mr. Given Cholo, has been associated with robberies in the Tshwane district in Gauteng”.

The statement issued by Robert Thenga Stats SA Chief Director: Gauteng Provincial Office added: “Mr. Cholo is an employee of Stats SA (and can be verified on the Stats SA website https://www.statssa.gov.za/?page_id=17709 ) and has been tasked to collect data in the Mamelodi area of Tshwane.

“Information circulated by the Ward Councillor for Mamelodi was mistakenly associated with a burglary scam in the region and has been shared with numerous social media groups across the country.
