Johannesburg – Three men have been shot along Mahalefele Road in Mofolo Central, Soweto, reports the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
“Motorists and residents are advised to be aware of a shooting incident along Mahalefele Road and Nape Avenue in Mofolo Central, Soweto,” the JMPD said Monday morning, (7 April 2025).
“It has been reported that three males were shot, with fatalities reported.
“Law enforcement officials and emergency services are currently on scene.”
The JMPD urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving in the vicinity of Mahalefele Road in Mofolo Central.
Vehicles were being diverted at Machaba Drive and Mageza Street.
“Expect potential road closures, traffic diversions, and increased congestion in the area as authorities manage the scene,” said the JMPD.
“Motorists are advised to avoid Mahalefele Road towards Mofolo Central.
“Coming from Dube, motorists can use Mncube Drive, Leselinyana, and Kinini Street to get to Machaba Drive, and from Zulu Drive, motorists can use Machaba Drive as an alternative route.”
Meanwhile, #TheLegalSA said the police have confirmed that the shooting incident was related to the taxi war between the WATA and NANDUWE taxi associations.
“Preliminary reports suggest that a gunfight ensued in the early hours of this morning between an unknown number of gunmen from both Witwatersrand Taxi Association (WATA) and Nancefield-Dube West Taxi Association (NANDUWE) factions,” #TheLegalSA said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The three dead men were believed to be marshals for WATA.
In March of this year, the Johannesburg High Court ruled in favour of WATA as having rights over the disputed routes.
The ruling appears to have heightened the dispute in which WATA and NANDUWE are fighting for control of six highly profitable routes in the central sections of Soweto.
