Johannesburg – Illegal water connections are being disconnected by Johannesburg Water.
The illegal disconnection operation in the central business district and south of the city (Region F) by Johannesburg Water began early Wednesday, (9 April 2025).
“This operation is part of Johannesburg Water’s ongoing efforts to address the substantial challenges posed by unauthorised connections to the city’s water network, which are also a major contributor to water losses,” Johannesburg Water said.
“This also contributes towards revenue collection efforts, which is crucial for the maintenance and upgrading of the City of Johannesburg’s water and sewer infrastructure.”
Following a risk assessment conducted by Johannesburg Water Security in coordination with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, disconnections will be executed in a phased approach.
Johannesburg Water said it remains committed to providing essential water services to all residents while addressing the challenges posed by illegal connections.
“We remind residents that unauthorised connections are a criminal offense and can cause damage to our infrastructure,” warned Johannesburg Water.
