Bloemfontein – The Free State education department is calling on parents, learners, and the community to work together to create safe and supportive learning environments at schools.
The call comes after a 13-year-old Grade 7 learner, Mbali Mlaba, tragically took her own life after being bullied at Vulindlela Primary School in Harrismith, Thabo Mofutsanyane District.
Free State MEC for Education, Dr. Mantlhake Julia Maboya has sent her heartfelt condolences to the family of Mbali, who passed away on Tuesday, 8 April 2025.
Mbali had previously expressed fear of her classmate, who bullied her the previous term.
The child had even requested a transfer to another school.
Unable to endure the taunting and beatings, Mbali tragically took her own life…
Reports said, Mbali’s mother found a note detailing the reasons her daughter committed suicide.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Grade 7 learner from Vulindlela Primary School,” MEC Maboya said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.”
MEC Maboya said the Free State Department of Education takes all incidents of bullying seriously and remains committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all learners.
“The department recognises the severe consequences of bullying on learners’ well-being and mental health,” MEC Maboya said.
“We are committed to providing support to learners and educators to prevent such incidents and promote a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect.
“Psychosocial support has already been provided to learners and educators affected by this incident.
“The department urges parents, learners, and the community to work together in creating a safe and supportive learning environment.”
MEC Maboya said if any learner or someone they know was being bullied at school, “please reach out to us. We are committed to supporting you”.
MEC Maboya added: “Let’s work together to prevent bullying and ensure our schools are safe and supportive for all learners”.
