Johannesburg – A motorist arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Good Friday is in more hot water after he tried to bribe his way out of trouble with the law.
“In a step that should send a stern warning to deviant motorists, members of the National Traffic Police have arrested a drunk driver for bribery on Easter Friday,” said Simon Zwane, spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
“The driver was stopped on N1 in Mokopane in Limpopo. When it was discovered that he was drunk, he offered officers 300 rand for them to ignore the offence.
“The officers immediately placed him under arrest and took him to Mokopane Police Station where he was charged with bribery and drunk driving.”
The Road Traffic Management Corporation has commended the officers for showing that “they are not for sale” and that road safety was not negotiable.
“Traffic officers will undertake heightened drunk driving operations today as history shows that this kind of conduct increases on weekends,” warned Zwane.
