Pretoria – An instructor at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Training Academy in Tshwane accused of raping a 20-year-old trainnee, will have to spend more time behind bars before he can apply for bail.
The bail application, which was supposed to be heard on Wednesday, (14 May 2025), was postponed to allow IPID to conduct investigations into other complaints of sexual assault reported against the instructor, who is a police captain.

Allegations are that on 6 May 2025, the 20-year-old trainee was walking with her platoon members to their sleeping quarters when she was called by the police captain to his office.
Once in the office, the police captain allegedly locked the door and demanded sex.
The instructor allegedly threatened that if the trainee refused his advances, he would serve her with a misconduct letter regarding an incident in April when she failed to salute him.
The instructor allegedly forced himself on the trainee.
IPID Spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the police captain made his first appearance before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 9 May 2025 following his arrest two days earlier.
The matter will now be heard on 23 May 2025.
