Johannesburg – Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) has concluded a groundbreaking partnership with Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela Investment Holdings (BBKIH) and Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM).
RMA said the partnership was designed to promote commercial growth and facilitate positive social impact by improving the overall well-being of mineworkers and the communities that surround mining operations.
Prioritising sustainable practices and community engagement, this collaboration seeks to create a lasting positive influence on both local economies and the lives of those affected by the mining industry.
“This collaboration represents a shared commitment to creating sustainable initiatives that empower employees, strengthen local economies and elevate health and financial security within mining communities,” Freedom Buthelezi, Executive: Partnership Development at RMA said on Friday, 29 May 2025.
As part of the partnership launch, attendees visited the Temo Tlhago Hydroponic Farm – a project that is a symbol of renewal and partnership established in honour of the mineworkers, community members, and broader stakeholders of the Bakgatla Community.
This was an opportunity for those present to witness the revitalised hydroponic farm at SBPM, a symbol of the parties’ commitment to sustainable development and vocational rehabilitation.
“The leadership of Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela is committed to leveraging its networks and resources to enhance the quality of life for our communities,” said Morena Kagiso Pilane, CEO of BBKIH.
“Initiatives like this serve as catalysts for economic development by expanding their reach to regional branches. Our ultimate objective is to secure reliable offtake agreements for local produce, thereby creating sustainable wealth within the community.
“We also aim to inspire and engage the youth by making agriculture appealing and aspirational.
“This partnership is a reflection of our broader vision, to build a resilient and sustainable Morafe (Community) that prioritises not only economic progress but also the holistic well-being of our people.”
Hydroponic farming, a trend that has been gaining traction in South Africa recently, is an innovative method that allows plants to grow without soil, using nutrient-rich water solutions.
This approach is particularly beneficial for sustainable agriculture, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
The Temo Tlhago Hydroponics Farm is a good example of an amalgamation of renewable energy and soil-free agricultural farming, and it creates value for all Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela stakeholders and the community at large.
It is a testament to the power of collaboration, resilience and innovation.
It is expected that, as a sustainable development, the farm will further drive vocational rehabilitation and reskilling with the purpose of economic empowerment venture of the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela community.
