Johannesburg – Police officers had to run for dear life when residents of Westbury threw stones at them and chased them down a road after they had arrested a suspect found with illicit drugs.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said at about 15:50 on Tuesday, 3 June 2025, the anti-gang unit was patrolling along Steytler Street in Westbury when they found a man in possession of drugs.
She said when the suspect was arrested, residents started throwing stones and bottles at police officers.
“Members tactically withdrew from the operation by ensuring the safety of the very community that was attacking them,” said Brigadier Mathe.
In the process, retreating police officers fired warning shots in the air.
Undeterred, the residents continued to throw stones and bottles at the police officers.
Fortunately, none of the police officers were injured, and they managed to evacuate safely.
None of the police vehicles were damaged in the attack by residents.
SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola said he was disappointed by the “conduct of this community”.
Westbury residents often complain about high crime levels in the area, including deadly fights over turf between drug dealers and traffickers.
“The community of Westbury has from time to time been complaining about the high levels of crime, including drug dealing in the area,” said General Masemola.
“We have deployed the anti-gang unit to deal decisively with this type of crime, but it seems as though when police take charge and enforce the law, communities turn on them and attack them.
“We cannot allow such a situation.”
General Masemola added: “We need the community to appreciate, support, and work with the police and not attack them.
“We cannot and will not tolerate this lawlessness.
“Our members will continue to discharge their duties without fear or favour.”
