Johannesburg – Much-loved legendary sports commentator, presenter, and anchor Phumlani Msibi has passed away at 57.
SuperSport announced that the football and boxing presenter died on Friday, 20 June 2025, after a short illness.

His contributions to sports broadcasting, particularly his insightful football commentary, have left an unforgettable mark on the industry.
SuperSport, Msibi’s professional home for many years, has issued a moving tribute to their colleague and friend.
Born on 15 December 1967, Msibi dedicated his life to sports broadcasting.
His passion and talent made him a beloved figure among viewers and colleagues alike.
Msibi’s career spanned decades, marked by his unique ability to connect with audiences through his commentary and analysis.
His broadcasting journey commenced as a ring announcer alongside the late boxing promoter Mzi Mnguni in the late 1990s.
Evolving into a seasoned boxing commentator, he achieved the distinction of being the first to commentate in both isiZulu and English for SuperSport.
Msibi became a household name in South African football after SuperSport acquired the Premier Soccer League (PSL) broadcast rights in 2007.
His clever use of language and approachable demeanor made him a favorite among viewers across the continent.
Msibi’s signature phrase, “Coach, thoughts please?”, became iconic, adding intrigue to post-match interviews.
Known as “Mr. Versatile,” Msibi contributed to various popular football magazine shows,including Super Saturday and Soccer Africa.He also hosted “Mzansi Legends,” interviewing prominent figures like Dr. Irvin Khoza and Dr.Kaizer Motaung Senior.
SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha expressed his condolences, highlighting Msibi’s professionalism and respect within the sports community.
“Msibi’s loss will be felt not just by the broadcaster and football fraternity, but by the whole sporting community at large,” Ramovha stated.
Before his tenure at SuperSport, Msibi honed his skills at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), setting the foundation for his illustrious career.
