Johannesburg – At least 12 schoolchildren were injured during the morning school run when their minibus taxi rolled along Westpark Drive in Montgomery Park, Randburg, Gauteng.
Spokesperson Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) Xolani Fihla said the schoolchildren injured in the crash on Monday, 28 July 2025, were transported to various medical facilities.
Narrating events leading to the crash, Fihla said: “A white minibus Toyota Quantum, operating as scholar transport, was allegedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control, resulting in the collision”.
JMPD officers responded and attended to the crash scene.
“The driver of the Toyota Quantum was found to be under the influence of alcohol,” said the JMPD spokesperson.
“He has been arrested and will be detained at Sophiatown SAPS [Police Station].
“He faces charges of reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.”
Meanwhile, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said over the weekend, 12 male drivers, aged between 26 and 50, were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor.
