Mokopane – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety is probing the cause of the deadly collision between a police van and an articulated truck that left six people dead.
The department said the deadly collision that occurred at about 11:30 on Thursday, 14 August 2025, claimed the lives of one police officer and five awaiting trial inmates.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mme Susana Mathye, visited the crash scene along the R101 road between Mokopane and Mookgophong in Waterberg District.
The MEC said she was “saddened by the tragic accident”.
MEC Mathye added, “Our heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased.
“Our thoughts also go out to the injured, and we wish them a speedy recovery.
“We are aware that six individuals were injured, with three taken to HF Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle, one airlifted to Polokwane Hospital, and two taken to Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane.“
She said the circumstances surrounding the accident were still under investigation.
“We urge all parties involved to exercise caution and patience as the investigation unfolds,” the MEC said.
“The Department of Transport and Community Safety, we will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that our roads are safe for all users.
“We appeal to drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety rules to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may we find strength in the face of this tragedy.”
The accident scene has been cleared, and R101 between Mokopane and Mookgophong is open for traffic.
