Durban – A drunk motorist who crashed into several cars as he tried to get away from traffic police has been arrested after a car chase along the N3 in the early hours.
Recounting events that began at about 02:30 on Sunday, 14 September 2025, KwaZulu-Natal MEC Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the motorist crashed into cars as he tried to get away.
“Around 02h30 this morning, I received a report detailing the mayhem caused by a drunk motorist on the N3,” said MEC Duma.
“A distressed female motorist alerted our highly dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) about a drunk driver who had collided into her [car] and fled the scene.”
The vigilant RTI team spotted and stopped a speeding white Mahindra Bakkie on Chota Motala Road northbound.
When confronted, the drunk driver assaulted the RTI officer and fled.
Whilst fleeing, the Mahindra collided with other vehicles on the N3.
The drunk driver drove through the Howick area and collided with another vehicle before heading towards Hilton via the R103.
On Hilton Avenue, once again, the Mahindra collided with a light delivery vehicle.
“Our brave RTI officer, Phiwokuhle Ndabezitha, was injured after he rear-ended the Mahindra,” the MEC said.
“We wish him a speedy recovery.
“He showed bravery and went an extra mile to save innocent lives.”
The drunk motorist was arrested and has been remanded in custody.
He faces several charges, such as assault and fleeing the scene of the accident.
He is also facing charges of reckless and negligent driving.
In another road incident on the N2 southbound, an IT specialist was arrested by an RTI team in Parkrynie.
He was caught driving at 192 km/h.
