Pretoria – Boxing South Africa (BSA) says it will ensure purses for boxers who were to fight in the Sun City Superbowl tournament, which was cancelled at the last minute, will be paid, and fans refunded for their tickets.
The tournament scheduled to take place on Saturday, 20 September 2025, at the Sun City Superbowl, was cancelled at short notice by TLB Promotions.
Commenting on the matter, BSA said it “learned with profound disappointment of the last-minute collapse of the boxing tournament promoted by TLB Promotions”.
The tournament, which was to be headlined by the bout between Aphiwe Mboyiya and Sibusiso Zingange, was officially cancelled by the promoter, Joyce Kungwane, on Friday, 19 September 2025, at around 21:00.
“The last-minute notice is deeply regrettable, given that all pre-weigh-in compliance measures had already been met by the promoter, save only for logistical details in relation to participants’ travel, accommodation, and subsistence,” BSA said.
The promoter cancelled the tournament because she could not meet some last-minute proposals from her sponsor, which included, among others, a suggestion to postpone it to Tuesday, 23 September 2025.
“As Boxing South Africa, our primary mandate remains to protect and promote the rights and welfare of all boxers and participants,” stated BSA.
“In line with this commitment, we will leave no stone unturned to cushion the blow of this devastating development on our affected licenses and stakeholders.
“Among the interventions we’ll pursue is to ensure that all our boxers’ purses money are paid in full as per the contracts they signed with the promoter.
“All fans who bought tickets for the show will also be refunded in full.”
BSA said it “sincerely apologises to, first and foremost, our boxers, boxing public, fans, sponsors, and all stakeholders for the disappointment and inconvenience caused by this cancellation”.
BSA added: “We share in your frustration and once more assure you that we’ll ensure that all those who’ve plunged our noble sport into this regrettable eventuality are held to full accountability”.
