Johannesburg – Mandla Mthembu, the former husband of socialite Khanyi Mbau, has passed away in New York at the age of 68.

Announcing his death on Monday, 22 September 2025, his family said: “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Mr. Mandla Mthembu, esteemed business mogul and long-standing member of the African National Congress”.

Mthembu died in the evening of 21 September 2025”.

The statement released by the family revealed that “Mthembu was admitted to hospital, where he suffered a second stroke”.

The family said that despite the “tireless efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to complications related to the stroke”.

Mthembu and Mbau were married when she was 19 and he was 30 years her senior.

They have a daughter together, Khanukani.

They got married in 2006 and divorced in 2009.

The Mthembu family has requested privacy during this deeply painful time as they mourn the loss of their beloved father, brother, and friend.

Further details regarding the memorial arrangement will be announced in due course.
