Port Shepstone – At least 44 motorists, including a policeman, were arrested for drunk driving in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on the South Coast.
However, the arrested police officer gave his colleagues the slip and now faces additional charges of escaping from lawful custody.
KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the arrests were made overnight from Friday, 26 September 2025.
MEC Duma said the arrests follow a successful execution of a “multidisciplinary roadblock” in Port Shepstone.
“It was executed from last night until the wee hours of the morning,” MEC Duma said.
“Forty-four motorists, including a policeman working at Port Shepstone Police Station, were arrested.
“The policeman escaped while being processed at the same police station where he is employed.
“He is now facing another charge of escaping from lawful custody.”
MEC Duma said all in all, 337 motorists have been arrested since 15 August 2025.
“We salute the RTI [Road Traffic Inspectorate] team for having worked efficiently with traffic officers from Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality and the South African Police Service,” the MEC said.
