East London – The bail of Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, has been extended to next year after he was found guilty of violating the Firearms Control Act.
On the third day of reading the judgment, the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, pronounced Malema guilty.
However, Malema’s bail was extended to 23 January 2026, when he will be back in court for a pre-sentencing hearing.
The matter was initiated by AfriForum, which laid criminal charges against Malema in August 2018.
Malema allegedly fired several shots with a firearm during the EFF’s fifth birthday celebrations held on 28 July 2018 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, outside East London.
Malema was accused of discharging a firearm in a built-up or public area without sufficient reason, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The EFF leader denies the allegations and insists he was filmed firing a toy gun.
His co-accused, security officer Adriaan Snyman, has been acquitted.
Commenting on the judgment, Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety, said justice has finally been served – despite years of delays and irregularities in this case.
“The evidence overwhelmingly proved that Malema committed several serious offences under the Firearms Control Act, and the verdict confirms that those who think they are untouchable will eventually be held accountable, no matter how long it takes,” stated Broodryk.
After the court proceedings, Malema told his supporters that he would appeal against the guilty judgment after his sentencing.
He said he was prepared to take the matter all the way to the Constitutional Court.
