eMkhondo (formerly Piet Retief) – Four people died and two others were seriously injured in a horror head-on collision along the N2 in eMkhondo, Mpumalanga

The deadly crash in the morning on Sunday, 5 October 2025, involved a blue VW Polo and a white Ford Ranger bakkie.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said three of the deceased, two males and one female, were traveling in the VW Polo.

A second deceased female was a pedestrian, whose body was found close to the wreckage of the bakkie.

The injured victims, including the bakkie driver and a child, were occupants in the bakkie and were rushed to the nearby hospital.

Mmusi said the cause of the collision was being probed with the relevant authorities.

“The investigation into the crash is underway; however, reckless driving cannot be ruled out at this stage,” Mmusi said.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie has conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.

“Motorists must always be alert on the road,” Macie urged.

“Every driver must obey the rules, prioritise their own safety and that of other road users to avoid needless loss of life and life-changing injuries.”
